I love all aspects of camping but one of the most enjoyable parts of camping for me is telling stories around the camp fire. When it gets dark around 9:00pm in the summer time, you can see fire flys in the distance and it some times mixes with the sparks as they rise from the camp fire so you can’t tell one from the other; especially when there is a lot of smoke. It’s usually very quiet and the kids are getting tired at that time of night. That’s when it’s time to pull out a good children’s book or ebook for about 10 minutes and read a story in the dim light to the kids.
One great story you can read to them is the story called “A Cat in the Kayak”. Kids will be mezmorized by this story and you will enjoy it too. When Victor takes in Teelo the cat, the feline isn’t thrilled about he voyage across the harbor. After all, a cat in a kayak is like a fish out of water. But when they arrive at the little house on Cloud Island, Teelo discovers it’s the perfect place for a calm-loving cat. Perfect, that is, until Teelo’s spot by the stove is taken away by some chickens. Worse, his cozy cushion is eaten when Terry the terrier moves in. You don’t have to read this specific story but I suggest you get the book and try it once. You’ll be hooked. And if this story isn’t the one for you, try a different one. I suggest spending no more than 10-15 minutes reading this story then move on to something else i.e. telling your own made up stories, true stories or singing around the campfire etc. You might even want to go in a tent, turn on a lantern and read a child to sleep.
Try a new Outdoor Cooking recipe from ebook on your next camping trip
I’ve gone camping a lot in my life and believe me when I say it’s easy to get into a rut and cook the same things outdoors that you always have. Cook eggs and bacon or sausage in the morning, Hot Dogs for lunch with some chips and hamburgers with potato salad and baked beans for dinner. And smores for dessert late at night. don’t get me wrong. These are inexpensive and very good items. But I’m suggesting you should consider getting an ebook (electronic cookbook) that has lots of new and creative outdoor recipes. Print a couple, buy the ingredients and take them with you on your next camping trip. See if everyone like your new choice.
